Let the games begin, starting with the bread and butter of Stanley, upon which they built an empire, the Bailey patent bench plane in its various configurations. Leonard Bailey designed what has become the standard plane configuration that’s still in use to this day. He was the undisputed champion of the plane slugfest that errupted in the decades after the Civil War. If you’re at all fascinated with handplane design, follow this link to read all about the Better Moustraps.
A general description of stuff to look for when examining a bench plane is listed under the 3 smoother. This stuff is applicable to all Stanley bench planes of the basic Bailey design as well as those that incorporate the Bailey patents such as the Bed Rocks , and comes from my observances of thousands of these planes. All dimensions that follow each number indicate the length of the sole, the width of the cutter, and the weight of the tool.
There were some subtle differences in the dimensions, but only those that are significant are mentioned where appropriate. So, if you have a plane that’s one-half inch shorter or longer than what’s mentioned here, don’t go thinking that you have some ultra-rare version of the tool. You don’t except in the case of the 2. If the plane is inches shorter than what’s listed here, you have one that’s suffered an amputation along the way.

Stanley Plane Identification and Stanley Plane Dating: What year and I have a #4 type 10 bailey that i found out on the listing from this site.
As the years have gone by while undertaking our massive home renovation, I’ve found myself purchasing more and more vintage hand tools to deal with certain projects. I started with a few hand planes to use for finish carpentry tasks, but then I’d find I could use a bevel gauge, small vise, or some other vintage tool to help move things along. I also started posting pictures of the tools I’d acquired along with some specifications about the date of manufacture.
It didn’t take long to realize I’d become a vintage tool collector, and I was spending a fair amount of time finding old bits of iron and steel that I wanted for the collection rather than because I needed them for a specific job. Tracking all of the information about these tools and posting photos of everything I have soon outgrew a single web page, so after putting it off for a few years I’ve finally decided to break up the vintage tool information into a number easier to handle individual pages.
The original Hand Planes page with all of the information regarding plane restoration and tuning has been shortened considerably and re-located into the new Et cetera section of the site. The old Vintage Hand Tool Data section of that page now stands on its own in the Specifications section. This page now contains all the photos of the vintage tools I own that used to be on the Hand Planes page , and the photo sets have been broken up into smaller groups of photos to allow easier and faster browsing.
I’ve organized the sets of photos below to correspond to how I’ve categorized my collection on the Vintage Hand Tool Data listing. Hopefully you’ll now be able to find a particular tool without difficulty, and without having to click through 30 or 40 images to get to the one you want to see. Included here are photos of all the hand planes and other vintage tools I currently own – with one exception. I recently had the chance to photograph a Stanley No.
I added the photo to the bench plane gallery below, since there aren’t many photos of the out there. The No.
Antique and Vintage Stanley Tools
Antique Stanley tools are often sought after for their aesthetic value. Handles were made of beautiful woods such as Brazilian rosewood, chosen for its durability, and the metal surfaces were often highly detailed. This combination means that many of the tools still around today have held up well and can be in demand.

I’ve converted some of the plane dating information found in Patrick Leach’s Plane Type Study into an easy-to-use hypertext flowchart. Hopefully by answering a few questions about your plane you can determine which type it is. The flowchart starts by asking questions about the cast iron bed of your plane. I’ve chosen the bed as a starting point because it has many easily identifiable markings, and it probably wasn’t replaced that often. Unfortunately, many plane types share the same bed markings, so other features are also used in dating.
Some plane parts were frequently replaced by their owners, or are easily separated from the plane, such as irons, cap irons, knobs and totes, and lever caps. These features are avoided where possible, along with features that appear in only some planes of a given type i. Where possible, the flowchart uses parts that were probably replaced less often, such as frogs, depth adjustment screws and lateral adjustment levers.
This approach doesn’t guarantee that you’ll date your plane correctly, as the flowchart can be thrown off by some hybrids. The best approach is to use the flowchart to date your plane, and then visit the Plane Type Study and Plane Feature Timeline to verify the type. Please let me know if I can improve the flowchart. The lighting makes some of the bench plane castings look like they’re made of bronze or something, but they’re really all cast iron.
If you find errors or discrepancies, Patrick’s Plane Type Study is the final authority.

While comprehensive type studies exist for the no. Using existing reference material from the previous type studies, I poured over old catalogs, advertisements, the planes themselves, and anything else I could get my hands on. Rather than try to create a formal type study, I decided to focus more on the practical goal of simply establishing criteria for dating the planes within the narrowest possible time frame. While there are still some gaps and inconsistencies across models some of which appear within the published type studies of the nos.
I intend to eventually format the data into a more usable format, but for now I want to put it out for reference and feedback.
